scary, scary advertisements...

Every single day, I always look at my phone once I woke up. Today, I went straight to Instagram and instantly, I became really scared and suspicious. Over the past few weeks, my parents have been talking about a trip to Florida over the summer. Of course, I was super excited, but this occurrence is making me feel super unsettled. The first advertisement that was on my phone was for a water park. In Orlando, Florida. I don't know if this was a coincidence or something, but it was the first ad that popped up on my Instagram feed. The picture of the ad is of two boys in the water, floating on top of a floating device. The caption of this picture states:

" With water slides galore, lazy rivers for miles and some of the country's best wave pools, Orlando's water parks offer an ocean of wonderfully wet experiences you'll never forget."

This really scared me because of how the caption suggests that by going here, you'll make some memories that you won't forget. With this, the advertisement makes it out to be something you go during the summer, where you won't forget the place. This made me very unsettled because once I looked at the account the ad was posted on, the bio of @visitorlando says : "Welcome to Orlando's official source for travel planning."

This kind of ties into the idea that the government could be watching our phones, through ads. The fact that this ad was the first ad that popped up from a long night of planning and talking about the trip makes this suspicious. I don't know if this is a coincidence or something that has to do with the government, but I really do hope that they aren't watching my every move. In all seriousness, I think that this ad could've popped up because of how summer is nearing and that they want to direct their attention to a lot of summer-y sort of stuff. Though this is only just one ad for the summer, I believe a lot more will become apparent throughout the next few weeks.

  1. I have come across similar situations such as the one you were in. On my laptop at home I was looking at clothes from a certain brand and a few days later I was scrolling through news article on my phone and every ad on the sides of the screen were for that brand I was previously looking at. It startled me finding these ads as I began to question how they gained such information from my laptop.

  2. This has happened to me with advertisements several times. Though it hasn't yet happened with travel plans, this happens all the times with household goods and appliances. One of the first occurrences of this that I can remember is with vacuums several years ago. However, I have since noticed that some ads attempt to offer products which may need replacing soon (things purchased long ago that are getting old). I found this very troubling because it implies that companies have some sort of record of what products my family has, how old they are, and when they will likely need to be replaced.
