sunday songs : is it true that pain is beauty?
Melanie Martinez - Mrs. Potato Head
-Sexual, hey girl, if you wanna feel sexual, you can always call up a professional, they stick pins in ya' like a vegetable
-Sexual, hey girl, if you wanna feel sexual, you can always call up a professional, they stick pins in ya' like a vegetable
-Mrs. Potato Head, tell me, is it true that pain is beauty?
-If you want a little more confidence, potatoes turn to french fries, yeah it's common sense, all you need is a couple more condiments, and a hundred thousand dollars for some compliments
-It's such a waste, when little girls grow into their mother's face but little girls are learning how to cut and paste, and pucker up their lips until they suffocate
These are a few lyrics that Melanie Martinez uses in her song, Mrs. Potato Head. These lyrics really hit hard to listeners because they're the sad realities we live in. For me, I was always so obsessed with plastic surgery and cosmetic construction and it consumed my life. I wanted to look a certain way and being the teenager I am, I knew it was impossible. I think the song shows how we are so obsessed over our appearance that we can't focus on what's on the inside. Melanie Martinez uses childish chimes and rhythms to help accompany her lyrics that make it even more nostalgic. Her songs really have an impact on the music industry. The lyrics she uses are what main stream artists are too afraid of talking about. They like talking about getting high, getting women, and getting money, while the lyrics that Melanie uses help us to understand that we shouldn't focus on those things. Though those kinds of songs are catchy, I think that songs with meaning are more important than drugs and clubbing. Melanie's intelligent way of executing her words makes her stand out from the crowd. My favorite lyrics out of the entire song is :
-If you want a little more confidence, potatoes turn to french fries, yeah it's common sense, all you need is a couple more condiments, and a hundred thousand dollars for some compliments
These lyrics show how much we almost hate ourselves and at the cost of it, we waste so much money on a few compliments. It's really sad to see how the younger generation is relying on plastic surgery to make themselves feel better. In addition, it's so sad to see how there is only one standard of beauty that men only like. Blonde and blue eyes. People seem to forget that people don't have control over their appearance, unless they're willing to pay for it. Boys also seem to call girls 'ugly,' only because they can't get sex from a woman, which is cruel and heartless. Boys nowadays seem like the only ones who create standards of beauty that people can't control.
Your blog really hit me because it’s true, nowadays we see so many judgemental people. Also I really love Melanie Martinez. Anyways, this generation has gone overboard with bullying. On the news, I saw how an 8 year old girl got plastic surgery because she got bullied every single day. What if people don’t have the money for that? Are people still going to judge? Either way, they are still going to get judged since people always find a way. It’s honestly a mess and I hate the fact that everyone goes through a phase of bullying just because of their looks. But overall, I love how you expressed your feelings towards these social issues by using lyrics from melanie. :)
ReplyDeleteI find it so sad how people constantly focus on the things that can't change (unless they get plastic surgery) because everyone is beautiful in their own way. Appearance is just another part of a person, it doesn't make that person, yet so many people neglect who a person is on the inside which is what truly matters.
