sunday songs : hayley kiyoko
Hayley Kiyoko's music video for her song Gravel to Tempo has a very deep meaning to it. They lyrics and visuals help for it to be deep and relatable. First, we get Hayley walking up stairs, with the footsteps against it very apparent. It then moves up for us to see her walking into her school and towards her locker. The camera pans to a group of girls that are all stunning and gorgeous. Hayley stares at the girls, but the girls don't look back at her. Once the halls empty, the girls stand in a line, with Hayley in front. She is signing to them, while some of the girls act like she's crazy. She then proceeds to break out into dance. I think the main thing about this part of the scene is the when the camera points to each of the girls' faces. They all show different emotions, but in also share similarities. Each girl shows a lot of curiosity, but one girl is not having it. She looks at Hayley with confused eyes and acts like Hayley is a freak. On the other hand, we get a girl who stares at Hayley with affection and with a bit of sultry.
We then see Hayley in a restroom by herself, staring into a mirror. The light seems to be natural lighting and it almost seems a little hazy. She is singing to herself and I think that this point shows how she wants to become more confident in herself to stand up to her crushes. The dances over to the cafeteria table that the girls are sitting at and hops onto the table, but not before we get a shot of her dancing in a junkyard by herself. There happens to be pictures of each girl around her and soon they begin to burn on fire. I think is a symbolism for rebirth within herself and self-assurance that she is adequate and perfect the way she is. After she dances on the table, she grabs a piece of chewed gum from the girl with sultry eyes and pops it into her mouth.
Throughout the song, we hear lyrics of Hayley being nervous and scared of being herself. The scene in which she dances in front of the girls (the first time) seems to be like a fantasy for her. She wants to prove to the girls that she doesn't need validation from the girls to be loved. Her dancing in front of them symbolizes how she is beginning to grow confident in herself and her looking in the mirror is like the turning point. The dancing within the fire is definitely a symbol for rebirth and self-acceptance. I genuinely think that Hayley picking up the chewed gum and eating it is kind of a big 'F.U' to the girls who made her feel lesser than.
