my media reflection

Over the course of this semester, I am beginning to realize that media isn't just on my phone anymore. It's everywhere. It's on the television, buses, magazines, bill boards, and so many more. With this, I believe that I consume over thousands of forms of media each day. I don't think that this is necessarily a bad thing, but it's not also a good thing. I think that media can have both negative and positive effects. First off, media helps me to be informed in political issues and most definitely pop culture. Secondly, media allows me to be sucked into something and not have any control over what I see or do. For example, I could be sucked into a brand, say Nike, and be obsessed with it. This is because of how the Nike brand had built themselves out to be something to strong and dominant, that they are now creating a cult-following. Media does this to people. Media allows for people to become fully immersed into a world that they can no longer control, where companies are pretty much brain-washing us consumers.

I think that I have definitely become even more aware of my interactions with media because of this class. This class has definitely positively impacted my life and my views in the realm of social media or any kind of media. When I am sitting with my family at home and we're watching a new episode of The Originals or Chicago Fire, we have to sit through countless minutes of commercials. I watch and pay attention to commercials even more closely that I have ever done before. I always seem to find my self pointing out which ad technique they've used in their commercials. I usually point out the techniques, Testimonial and Plain Folks. These techniques are frequently used throughout many commercials and I think that by noticing them, I'm being more aware of how companies are marketing themselves to viewers.

Oh jeez, my media consumption has drastically changed this semester. I have dropped all of my streaks and I have limited my use of social media. I have been more in tune with Instagram because I think it's super fun and very entertaining. I use Instagram as a form to promote my makeup account and to make new friends who are in the beauty community and I absolutely love it. I'm honestly in love with Instagram for that reason. It allows me to be creative and more interactive with being an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. I think that media literacy can tie itself into this. Media literacy is so important it's a priority to be safe on the internet, as well as knowing how it works. With this, I believe that all schools should teach this topic because I do feel like not a lot of parents actually do a good job in telling their kids about the dangers of the internet. Though I use Instagram as a way to interact with my followers and become friends, I definitely think that I'm smart enough to use it in a way for me to just have fun.

By keeping this log, I have become more aware of how media works. In addition, I think that it helped me to become more aware of how several music director and artists work. In addition, I think that keeping this log has made me become more confident in knowing how companies use their ads and commercials to sell their products. It allows me to become more observant of how our world is so focused on money, that it doesn't actually focus on their products and the well being of their consumers.

Overall, I believe that media is such a great thing, but at the same time it could be a double-edged sword. I think that media will ALWAYS be a part of me no matter what. It's something that doesn't seem like it's going to go away anytime soon. This is because many companies are very money-hungry. But it's positives will mostly have more of an effect than the negatives. Even though the negatives have a lot of an effect on the world, I just feel like media can always be an outlet for expression and creativity for people all around the entire world.
