hayley kiyoko - what i need - ft. kehlani

Yet again, Hayley Kiyoko has come out with a new music video. It is the first music video that has come out since her album, Expectations, dropped on Thursday. My initial reaction to the music video was 'wow this video is amazing.' And a few days later, my mind hasn't changed. The video starts off with Kehlani being scolded by her aunt for packing up her clothes in a backpack. Her aunt seems to be very homophobic, saying things like ' Why did you have to turn out like that?' Kehlani ultimately leaves the house and Hayley shows up in an old car and they drive away, but not before holding up two middle fingers at her aunt. The lighting of the entire video seems to be all natural, but there is also some artificial lighting in the bar that they are in. The scenes in the bar shows a lot of red lights, which could symbolize their love for one another. Red is a color that is associated with passion, joy, and anger. The red foreshadows an event later on in the video. Soon after, they almost get into a car crash, but Hayley avoids it. Kehlani seems to just laugh it off. The relationship that they have shows that they can't take things too seriously and that they're carefree. The two pack up their stuff, walk on the road and look for cars, in order to hitch a ride. They jump into the back of a truck, without the driver's knowledge, but he soon finds out. He screams a them, but Kehlani asks for a ride and he only lets her get in because she is attractive, calling her 'baby' and touching her hair. Hayley, being as smart as she is, doesn't want to get into the car with the man and argues with her girlfriend. This reveals to us that Kehlani's character seems to be someone who only wants to get what she wants when she needs it. The two drive away, and the clips following and Hayley seems to be walking alone. The scenes following shows all the memories of that Hayley has of her and Kehlani. To go back with the red, the color red symbolizes how Hayley is so angry with Kehlani for leaving her. But soon enough, Kehlanie comes running back and the two begin to kiss each other.

I think that the reason why Hayley posted this video was to give more awareness for Pride month, since the following day was the start of it. This advertising strategy helps the members of the LGBTQ+ to feel like they have someone to look up to in the industry. This is because there aren't a lot of LGBTQ+ artists out in the industry. In addition, everyone loves music, so by having a visual aid in order to promote equality helps many fans and members.
